Link Up Term 4 Week 9 2022

These last few weeks of the year are always filled with final assignments and exams, a diversity of activities and a feast of celebrations! We have now farewelled our Year 10 and 11 students who have completed exams and transition days in preparation for their studies in 2023. "Moving Up" ceremonies have also featured recently, with the Alive Early Learning to Reception liturgy and the beautiful Year 6 to 7 celebration. We wish every blessing for these students in this significant transition as they begin a new phase of their St Francis de Sales College journey in 2023.

We proudly gathered for the Year 12 Graduation Dinner on Thursday 24 November at the Adelaide Festival Centre. Our recent graduates were acknowledged for their contributions to the College in 2022 and the many years previously. It was a fitting last celebration for our graduates, in the presence of family, friends and staff. Ros Mattner and her team of diligent helpers ensured the evening was filled with the formality (and fun) it deserved.

In the same week we had an enthusiastic group of students assist with the Variety Club Christmas Lunch in the city. These intrepid Year 10 and 11 volunteers worked tirelessly to set up the event and helped entertain hundreds of disadvantaged children. We thank them, Carol Jarrell and other supporters for organising this special opportunity to care for those less fortunate.

The joy on the faces of our Junior School students, parents, carers and extended family members was certainly evident at the R-6 Sports Day. The weather was perfect, and we were delighted to be able to enjoy the fun, friendly competition and teamwork. Nadia Honner, her amazing staff team and the Year 8 student helpers ensured the day ran like clockwork and was an outstanding success.

Last week saw the many and magnificent performances of our Dance and Drama students in The Super Dooper, Sensational, Fantastically Marvellous and Extraordinary Talent Show. It was another great showcase led by Peta Bojanic with the assistance of a whole host of staff and old scholars, and featured our Stage 2 Dance students for the final time, even though the gorgeous Dance Minis tried their best to steal the show!

We were delighted to be able to welcome families to gather with us in the Community Sports Centre for our Carols Evening last Thursday, after the disruption of COVID and changes to the format in 2021. It was an opportunity for our community to get into the Christmas spirit with laughter, song and nativity stories - what a mammoth organisational effort by teachers, support staff and families! This Christmas event followed our wonderful Pageant "paraders", who took pride of place in the float just before Santa as they wound through the streets of Mount Barker. Many thanks to Michelle Baulch and a host of others who contributed to this great event for our College and wider community. 

Our Senior Leaders have spent a few days on camp at Victor Harbor as they plan for their leadership roles next year. We acknowledge the 2023 College Captains, Stephanie Formby and Aimee Brooks, as well as Senior Student Leaders Charlotte Ernst, Summer Henderson, Luella Koral, Kiara McInnes, Benjamin Murphy and Kathryn Peacock. We know that they will be fine ambassadors and leaders for St Francis next year. Thank you to Oreste Farrugia and his team of staff who led this process, culminating in the camp this week.

We had some weary but happy Year 9 campers return from Hindmarsh Island after a few days of aquatic and retreat activities (with tenting!). It was a great way to finish the year as a cohort in the lead-up to Year 10 in 2023, with the guidance of Year Level Leader, Mark Andrews and his team. 

A plethora of other end of year activities and events have also taken place since the last Link Up - almost too many to mention! Some of these include the Stage 2 Art Exhibition at the Library, Sports Awards Night, new and current student transitions, Year 5/6 Art Show, wonderful excursions, athletics, knockout sports, reflection days, Vinnies FIA cooking and many, many more! We are blessed to have teachers, ESO staff and families who organise and support these important activities for our students - a massive thank you to each and every one of you!

We look forward to the culminating event for our College this week as we gather for the End of Year Liturgy and Awards Presentation Ceremony Tuesday morning. It is a special way to celebrate 2022 as a St Francis de Sales community and acknowledge the achievements of students in the presentation of academic, endeavour, improvement and a variety of special awards. What a wonderful last school day for our community! 

As the final Link Up for this year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank EVERYONE for their contributions in 2022, through trying circumstances and disruptions. We have again shown our resilience, compassion and care for one another amidst some significant challenges. Love and kindness always shine through in these times and I thank the staff, students, families and volunteers for another successful year of learning and growth at St Francis. Gavin McGlaughlin sends his warm wishes to you as well, having kept abreast of all the wonderful things that have been happening this term during his time on Carer's Leave.

As you are aware, I will be joining the Mary MacKillop College community next year as Principal, thus finishing my 8 years at the College as Deputy Principal. It is impossible to adequately express the myriad emotions at this time; joy, sadness, gratitude, nostalgia and so many more! It has been such a privilege to serve the St Francis de Sales community as it has flourished and grown. To staff, students and families, both past and present, I extend my humble thanks and love as you have supported and nurtured me over these years. Our College is truly special, and I will take the beautiful memories of it with me as I start my next adventure "down the hill", knowing that I will always feel part of the St Francis family.

I send my prayers and good wishes to you in this Advent season in the lead up to the celebration of the birth of Jesus. May your holidays be filled with just the right amount of family, fun, recreation and rest.

Picture this.

It is 8:40am on a typical school day in Term 4. The Kiss ‘n Drop line is like a millipede as it wheels its way forward and then resembles an airport drop off as car doors open and retrieved school luggage is followed by a rushed flurry of kisses and hugs. Inside, the Deck is buzzing with games of chasey, forts are being built out of furniture, the playgrounds are filled with laughter and excitement, parents are chatting, watching their offspring traverse the rocks and swales. The OSHC disco on the hill is closing down for the morning as their patrons rock into school mode and teachers, coffee in hand, patrol fluorescently through the school yard. The energy is pulsating.

Meanwhile, in another part of the school, the atmosphere is far more sedate. Some kids are chatting quietly to each other, ritualistically a few are playing down ball in the courtyard but the majority of early arrivals have their heads lowered absorbing the latest posts on social media. The energy is low and the morning moods seem solemn. A cheery ‘good morning’ is often met with a muffled reply and usually without eye contact. As the crowd swells, the mood lightens but the tech connection is a constant. Device in hand is de rigueur. The contrast between the two areas of the school is stark and worrisome.

Our obsessive trap with technology is hitting new highs (or lows) and our young people are clutched tightly within its grasp. The SA Government recently announced that phones would be banned in department schools. Catholic Education SA is yet to make an announcement on this. Our College policy, may need tweaking in the near future.

Acclaimed psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg, recently commented:

"Banning phones in high schools from first bell to last, including recess and lunch, would be an investment in students' mental health." 

The 'anxiety generation’ as they have been coined, are obsessed with technology and many are addicted to their phones. While they are more ‘connected’ than any generation before them, statistics for loneliness, isolation and depression are skyrocketing. It seems that our advances in technology are seriously affecting the wellbeing of young Australians. Our teenagers, with knowledge literally at their fingertips know less and less and curiosity is being ravaged and replaced with Tik Tok fascination. Somehow, a re-set needs to happen. We need more of the ‘days in the old school yard’.

Best wishes to all families in our wonderful St Francis de Sales community. Thank you for all that you have done for your children in 2022, a year that has been extremely challenging on many levels. May the joy and peace of Christmas bring happiness and wellbeing to all.

What a wonderful time to be present and experience the amazing work behind the scenes at this busy, but festive, time of the year. We have begun the season of Advent, and in this time we reflect on the year that has been as we prepare and await the birth of Jesus at Christmas. So many events to help us look back at the journeys the students have had, and the roles we have all played in what seems like one of the longest years. We acknowledge the efforts of the students and staff in our final activities and events; transition sessions for new and current students, visits to new learning spaces and neighbourhoods, excursions, retreats, R-6 Carols, R-6 Sports Day, The Super, Dooper, Sensational, Fantastically Marvellous and Extraordinary Talent Show performances, homegroup celebrations and so many more!

We’ve heard it said, ‘It’s not the destination that matters, but the journey’. Whilst we believe that all our students can achieve their highest potential, the revelations they start to have about themselves and their capabilities in times of struggle is often the most impactful learning experience they can have. We congratulate all our students on completing their final assessments and exams, and wish them all well as they await their final results.

With the 2022 school year coming to an end, we are excited to come together in community to celebrate the Annual Awards Presentation Ceremony on Tuesday 13 December. This is a special time to recognise the academic achievements of our students and those who show deep commitment to living out our Heart Values every day. We look forward to having families join us and share in this wonderful occasion.

Although my time in the St Francis de Sales community has been a short one, I am so uplifted by the generosity of those who contribute to our College community. It has been an interesting year, with staff, students and families needing to pivot at a moment’s notice. However, the flexibility and creativity shown when a challenge is presented, and consistency to come together in difficult times has been inspirational to witness. Thank you for all that you have done and brought to this community so we all can be who we are and be that well.

Many blessings and wishes to you all. Have a safe and wonderful Christmas season with those you hold most dear, and I wish you all a most joyous start to 2023.

The Advent Season provides us with an opportunity to make space for hope, peace, joy and love in our hearts and lives as we prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. It has been wonderful to see these Advent virtues actioned in our community through our students and the many activities and events that they have participated in over recent weeks. 

Dad’s Group Event 

On Sunday 27 November our Dad’s Group gathered together for a BBQ and an Adults vs Kids Game Day. The Knights of the Southern Cross generously supported the Dad’s Group by setting up their BBQ and cooking sausages for the group who were famished after a very competitive game of soccer. Fortunately, the scores were drawn but there has been some talk of a rematch in the future some time.

Year 6 Reflection Day 

Our Year 6 students participated in their Reflection Day in Week 6. The theme was ‘Community - All for one and one for all’ (One Body, Many Parts’,1 Corinthians 12:12-27) and the day’s focus was to reflect upon and value each other’s individual strengths as each person is unique. This was also an opportunity to value and appreciate the diverse gifts that God has given each person which enriches our Year 6 community. To bring deeper meaning to this theme, the scripture passage from Corinthians was explored for the meaning it has for us in our lives, along with several group activities which were lots of fun. 

Year 7 Reflection Day 

Our Year 7 Student Reflection Day was recently held in the Laratinga Wetlands. We were blessed by glorious weather, and it was fantastic to experience nature, wildlife, and time in fellowship with each other as we explored the theme of ‘Journeys - Going the extra mile’ (Matthew 5:38-42) in our lives. 

Through the day students explored the use of labyrinths as a mindful and prayer experience based on the journey of their life, the journeys taken by many in the lead up to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and the life cycle/journeys of the Laratinga Wetlands habitat and ecosystem. It was a wonderful day filled with walking through the wetlands, craft activities, photography, games, and nature assessments. We are incredibly grateful that Fr Richard was able to join us on the day and share his bird watching skills with us. 

Fred’s Van Cooking 

Recently Year 4 FIA (Faith-in-Action) students spent time in our Food and Hospitality Centre with Hazel Hunter and Sr Shiji busily cooking and preparing baked goods and food for Fred’s Van to share with the people their services support and assist. The students cooked with care and enthusiasm – taking great delight in sampling their goods before they were packaged for delivery to Fred’s Van for distribution. 

Vinnies FIA Group Visit 

Ten of our Year 6 FIA students visited a Women and Children’s Shelter this week. It was a wonderful day for all involved. Our students and staff prepared gift bags, made Christmas cards with the families, and then cooked a BBQ lunch for the women and children. Our students also enjoyed playing games with the children and enjoyed their time together. It was a wonderful day, and our students look forward to more opportunities like this in the future. Thank you to Sr Shiji and the Year 7 students who helped to pack the gift bags for each of the families that we visited.  

Vinnies Christmas Appeal 

Thank you very much for your generous donations to our Vinnies Christmas Appeal this year. Our students are so excited to see the donation baskets in their classrooms fill knowing that what they collect will make a difference to families at Christmas. The Vinnies Conference in Mt Barker is incredibly grateful for your donations and will use the donated goods to prepare hampers for families in need this Christmas.  

Variety Kids Christmas Party 

It was wonderful for our students to resume their involvement in the Variety Kids Christmas Party this year post COVID restrictions. So it was a fantastic opportunity and incredible experience for our students to be able to support Variety over two days by setting up the Wayville Pavillion on the first day and then assisting at the Christmas Party in a range of roles on the second day. Thank you to the Variety Club for inviting our students to volunteer their time to support the magnificent work they do in our community.

Year 7 Canberra Tour 22

In the very early hours of the morning on Monday, 4 November, fifty five Year 7 students and five teachers departed for a week of fun and learning in our nation’s capital, Canberra. This was the 11th tour since its inception in 2012, and has been assisted by funding received through the Federal Government PACER program (Parliamentary and Civics Education Rebate). This year the contribution from PACER was $90 per student.

As always, this was in incredible educational experience for students, who were immersed in a variety of learning opportunities each day that would not be possible within the confines of a classroom. The trip allowed students to consolidate many of the concepts learnt prior to the tour and introduces them to some amazing, rich and unique learning experiences. This is also a special journey for students because they spend the week together as a community, building relationships and their independence.

The Year 7 students are to be commended for being fine ambassadors for our College. A very special thank you goes to the Canberra Tour teachers for their outstanding commitment and dedication toward the success of the tour, and to our families, for being so supportive of their children and the learning experiences we offer.

The whole College celebrated Remembrance Day in our Community Sports Centre to pay respect to returned service men and women and those who died serving our country. It was a ceremony that was both reflective and celebratory. Thanks to all students and staff for supporting this event.

This term has proven to be what feels like the longest and shortest of all.

We started with Year 12 students completing all classes at the end of Week 2 ready for a SWOTVAC and then into their final SACE Stage 2 exams. We are proud of all the students; their commitment to study, completion of exams and wish them all the best as they receive their results in the next few weeks.

Stage 1 exams saw the Year 10 and 11 students completing their classes and experiencing their exams in Frayne 1 where all Stage 2 exams are held. Reports will provide exam results as well as overall grades for all Stage 1 subjects.

Year 9 students are having a fun filled last couple of days with activities including Adelaide University visit and Mount Summit walk.

Year 7 and 8 have spent some time completing STEAM Design Challenges with team building games and a group challenge that saw presentations to judging panels and awards for two categories, team building and Design Challenge. Week 9 will see their participation in the Amazing Race

Finally, our R-11 Awards Presentation will provide an opportunity to celebrate a year of successes.

From July to November, Young Change Agents partnered with the Flight Centre Travel Group to run a Future of Travel Youth Design Challenge. The aim of the challenge was to help solve five key challenge themes of Sustainability, Inclusion and Accessibility, Culture and Identity, Regional and Rural Development and Technology. From the Northern Territory to Tasmania over 3,000 students participated in the challenge, with 150 entries submitted from 64 schools across Australia. The top 10 finalists were invited to a virtual Showcase and Fireside Chat where they shared their ideas to a panel of judges. Three of those finalists included our Year 9 students.

The shortlisted teams were:

Team Logan and Camillo presented Culture: respect the adventure | Information for travellers on specific cultural and respectful behaviour significant to the travel areas.

Team Phebe and Bella presented Safer Travel | To educate sick people on the air quality of travel destinations.

The team that got into the final, and received a High Commendation, was:

Team Lachlan, Jesse and Caleb presented Travel Superfund Stocks | Aimed to reduce inequality and give more people the opportunity to travel.

The Problem: "Some people are unable to travel, simply because they cannot afford it."

The Opportunity: "How might we use investing and superfunds, to allow people to travel?"

Target Audience/Customer: "Anyone who is looking to travel!"

The Solution: "Travel Superfund stocks aims to give more people the opportunity to travel, by allowing them to invest their money (like a superfund), with profits given back to the customers."

Judge's Comments: "Innovative way to support people to travel! With rising costs of travel post COVID, affordability is a key issue. Very outside of the box thinking here, Well done!"

Mount Barker Christmas Pageant

On Saturday, 3 December we were fortunate to be able to represent the College at the Mount Barker Christmas Pageant. Our Senior School students supported the Nativity float sponsored by The Mt Barker Courier newspaper. They looked fabulous as they reminded us of the real reason for our Christmas celebrations. We had 32 students from our R-2 classes who dressed as angels and shepherds and enthusiastically followed the Nativity float. We appreciated the help of so many Junior School parents who provided costumes and walked with us to help supervise the children. Even though we were right in front of Santa, we were able to stay focussed and wave and cheer to the crowd. We really made a difference by showing pride in our College and letting everyone know who we are.

Year 6 Moving Up Ceremony

As we wind up an amazing year of learning, our R-6 community have experienced an array of wonderful events to celebrate the end of 2023. One very significant event for our students was the Year 6 Moving Up Ceremony, held on Thursday 8 December. 

This event is an exciting milestone for students in Year 6 as they make the transition from the R-6 community into the 7-12 community and is a wonderful celebration of their learning journey at the College thus far. 

During the Ceremony each student had their Reception and Year 6 photo shown - what a difference seven years make! The students and families loved reflecting on their growth and development over this time. An important part of the Ceremony was when students received a candle and a cross as a symbol of welcome into the 7-12 community. 

Congratulations to all our students in Year 6! 

R-6 Carols Evening 

A highlight of the calendar is always the R-6 Carols evening and it was especially wonderful to be able to hold this event yesterday evening with families in attendance for the first time in a couple of years. It was a joyful way to be able to celebrate the season of Advent and the coming of Christ with students and families. 

It was a pleasure to see the students perform beautifully after many weeks of practice. The Year 2 students did an amazing job of performing the Nativity Play and sharing their artworks. Well done also to our Angelicus Choir and Singing Group for a lovely performance on the evening too. 

The R-6 community wish all families a safe, happy and restful Christmas break and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in the new year.

On Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 December, Week 8, our Semester 2 Drama and Dance students transported all those who attended The Super, Dooper, Spectacular, Sensational, Fantastically Marvellous and Extraordinary Talent Show production to a ‘live’ talent show, complete with a corrupt judging panel!

Over two afternoons and evenings, Drama and Dance students presented their entertaining and fun performances, two for the Junior school students (who are a brilliant audience, and performances we always look forward to), one for the secondary students and another two evening performances for an enthusiastic, ‘family and friends’ audience. At the same time the production was filmed so that a streamed version of The Super, Dooper, Spectacular, Sensational, Fantastically Marvellous and Extraordinary Talent Show – The Movie can be viewed by all those who could not attend.

For the first time ever, the two Year 9 Drama classes were integrated into the Dance production to add another layer of awesome entertainment, creating a production like no other! A huge thank you must go to Aleks Bojanic who continues to work his magic with the incredible light and sound production and for once again adding his immense talent to the post-production work. I am also incredibly lucky to have Tayla Ward, Aaliyah Ferreira and Kyla Martins working with, and teaching the Dance Minis and Dance Crew and Karen Boswell and Michele McDonald taking care of the ‘Green Room’ (Dressing Room) chaos during performances! Administration Extraordinaires, Kate Thomas and Rose Ward are invaluable – I am humbled by their selfless assistance – thank you so much. A final huge thank you must go to Trinity Kyriacou for her fantastic work as the 2022 Dance Captain – Trinity will pass the baton to the 2023 Dance Captain early next year.

When we sat down at the beginning of this year, our Music Department goals where to give our many talented young musicians and vocalists as many opportunities to perform in live settings, something that was greatly missed in the previous couple of years and to look to grow our ‘Music Family’… we are pleased to say that we have achieved these goals.

Students have performed at several College based concerts, assemblies, award ceremonies and masses throughout the year and we have been very fortunate to be able to have our talented choirs, vocal groups and singers experience performing to large audiences at the Catholic Schools Music Festival, the Balhannah Oakbank Christmas Concert and the massive community event that is the Mt Barker Carols in the Park event.

Earlier in the year, our vocal group JazZone, were rewarded for their hard work and dedication when they were awarded 3rd place in their category in the prestigious, nationally acclaimed, Generations in Jazz Festival. We greatly look forward to being able to once again travel to Mt Gambier in 2023 after a couple of years of online involvement.

And, our goal to increase our ‘Music Family’ has certainly been a blessing and sees our Music Department in very good shape for many years to come. Our Instrumental Music program has been further diversified during 2022 with the addition of several new tutors and the offering of tuition in a greater selection of musical instruments and vocal styles. 2023 promises to see the introduction of further options and we are now welcoming enquiries for student registrations (Reception – Year 12) for Instrumental Tuition. At St Francis de Sales College, within our Performing Arts Departments of, Music, Dance and Drama, we are very much about giving all of our students the opportunity to experience the ‘buzz’ and the enjoyment of live performance, and that is certainly our major focus in Music – not everybody can become a concert pianist, a solo violinist or a popstar but everyone can certainly experience the positiveness of sharing music.

Well, here we are at the last Link Up for the year… and things have definitely not slowed down. In the past few weeks we have had a number of events where students have been able to showcase their athletic abilities and sporting abilities.

During Week 5 we held our Annual Sports Awards Night, which was coordinated by our Stage 2 Basketball Academy Students (Jack Sullivan, Bailey Vivian and Matt Linke). This is where we recognise the outstanding achievements of our sports individuals and teams. The 2022 Major Award winners were:

Junior Team of the Year: 5/6 Boys Basketball (finished 3rd in the state)
Senior Team of the Year: 7-9 Boys Netball (finished 2nd in the state)
Sportsperson of the Year: Bailey Vivian
Athlete of the Year: Gabriel Cregan

Term 4 has also seen a couple of our senior teams finish their finals campaigns. Our Year 9/10 Girls Basketball team competed in the state final day. Coached by Stephanie Formby they were a young team who fought hard and ended up 6th overall. Our 9/10 Boys Cricket team also competed in the state final against Eastern Fleurieu School. This team was made up of Year 8/9 students and they unfortunately went down in a tough, hard-fought match.

During Week 6 our Years 3-6 Athletics Team travelled to Bridgestone Stadium to compete in the SACPSSA Competition. All students represented the College in an exemplary manner and we had a couple of outstanding performances by Joze Wamayi and Zara Newman, who won their Age Champion medals.

Our 2022 year ended with the R-6 Sports Day, which provided an opportunity for students to compete in a number of different fun and competitive activities, and to have fun being active. All students are encouraged to have-a-go, try their absolute best, demonstrate positive sportsmanship and support their house team loudly and proudly. The House Sports Cup winners were Padua, with Lyon taking out the House Spirit Cup.

And in our last Link Up I would also like to recognise the efforts of all of the teachers, students, parents and staff members who volunteered to coach, manage, umpire and assist the various teams. These amazing people spent a huge amount of their own time organising trainings and coordinating the events. We have also had a number of old scholars come back to assist across the various sports, which is an incredible blessing.
